Mother’s day flowers in Melbourne: what to send the mum in your life

Every year, the Mother’s day rush hits in the final 48 hours. By Saturday morning, the best arrangements have already gone out the door. A short, practical guide so this year goes differently.

Mother’s day flowers in Melbourne are a different proposition from what you’ll find any other time of year. Mother’s day 2026 falls on Sunday 10 May, with the city deep into autumn by then. The bouquets that arrive looking their best on Sunday morning are the ones built around what’s flowering now, ordered with enough lead time, and matched to the mum opening them.

What’s in season in Melbourne in early May

Flower Shop Carrum Downs

Early May is mid-autumn. After 20 years of arranging flowers for this weekend, we know which blooms hold up through to the following Tuesday and which ones don’t. A few favourites for the season:

Chrysanthemums are the obvious one. The combination of their May bloom season and their nickname (mums) made them Australia’s traditional Mother’s day flower somewhere in the early 1900s, and the association stuck. If your mental picture of a chrysanthemum is the supermarket bunch your nan got in 1995, the modern range will surprise you. Disbuds, pompoms, spider varieties and large-headed blooms in everything from soft creams and dusty pinks through to deep burgundies and lime greens. Long-lasting in a vase and genuinely beautiful.

Dahlias are still going at the tail end of their season. Late autumn dahlias bring sculptural shape and rich, layered colour that suits a more dramatic arrangement.

Lisianthus is one of our most reliable flowers for new mums and grandmothers. Soft, ruffled, rose-like blooms in pinks, whites and creams. They last well in water and don’t shed petals all over the table.

Late-season roses are still coming through in May. The peak of the season has passed, but there’s still excellent quality stock around, particularly from Australian growers.

Australian natives like banksia, waxflower and proteas offer a completely different look. They last unusually well in a vase, often outliving softer flowers by a week or more, which makes them a strong choice for someone who likes a gift that stretches well into the following weekend.

We grow some of our own flowers at the Carrum Downs shop, which means a few of these come straight from the garden rather than from a wholesaler.

Matching the bouquet to the mum, not the age

The most common mistake we see at Mother’s day is buying for an idea of what mums like rather than for the person you’re buying for. A few archetypes that might help you think it through.

The traditional mum: soft pinks, classic roses, chrysanthemums in the warmer end of the colour range. A hand-tied bouquet or a vase arrangement she can put on the dining table without rearranging anything to make room.

The garden lover: mixed seasonal arrangements with texture, foliage and natives. She’ll often appreciate something that looks like it could have come from her own garden, just better styled.

The minimalist: single-variety statement pieces. White tulips. A single phalaenopsis orchid in a bowl. All-white roses. Less is genuinely more for this mum.

The sentimental scent-loving mum: freesias, stock, sweet peas. Worth knowing that scent-led bouquets are best ordered for collection or short-distance delivery, because their strongest moment is the first 48 hours.

A note for mums who get headaches from strong scents: low-scent options exist in good variety. Most modern roses, gerberas, lisianthus and ranunculus carry little to no scent. Our guide on flowers for headache-prone homes covers this in more detail.

Ordering logistics for Mother’s day weekend

The Mother’s day weekend is the busiest of the year for florists across Melbourne. Order early to get the arrangement you want, not the one left after everyone else has chosen.

  • Order by Friday 8 May for guaranteed weekend delivery across Melbourne and Victoria.
  • Saturday 9 May same-day delivery has a cut-off during the morning. Check our delivery page for current cut-off times.
  • We deliver on Sunday 10 May, with cut-offs tighter than a normal weekend.
  • For mums interstate or overseas, we’re members of the Interflora and Petals networks, so the order is placed with us and a florist near the recipient does the local arrangement and delivery.

If you’re sending flowers to a mum in a hospital or aged care facility, ring the facility ahead of time. Some wards (oncology in particular) don’t accept fresh flowers, and some have restrictions on strong-scented blooms.

Card messages that don’t sound generic

The default florist-card messages tend toward the saccharine. A few short examples that stop short of cliché:

  • Thanks for everything, Mum. All my love.
  • There’s no one in the world I’d rather have in my corner.
  • From your favourite child (don’t tell the others).
  • For the woman who taught me everything worth knowing, and a few things I didn’t ask for.

These work better as starting points than scripts. Even one line in your own words lands better than a polished sentence she’s read on six other cards over the years.

A short note on what not to do

A few quick ones we’ve learned the hard way:

  • Don’t over-order on size if she lives in a small unit. A generous arrangement can dominate a kitchen bench and become an obstacle she has to work around for the rest of the week.
  • Don’t send heavily-scented lilies if she has hayfever. Don’t send any lilies at all if she has a cat at home. Lilies are highly toxic to cats, and even pollen brushed onto fur can cause fatal kidney failure once the cat licks it off.
  • Don’t leave it until Sunday morning. By 9am the choice has usually narrowed to whatever’s still on the bench.

If you’d rather pick something out in person or want a one-off arrangement, the Carrum Downs Regional Shopping Centre shop is open right through the Mother’s day weekend. The online same-day cut-off for Saturday 9 May is during the morning, so ordering by the Friday locks in exactly the arrangement you want.
